Awards recognise our outstanding nurses for their significant contributions and performances on the job. Not a means to an end, awards also encourage recipients to ‘continue to keep up the good work and inspire others to follow the paths of excellence in caregiving’. As a form of accolade, awards would inevitably boost our nurses’ sense of pride in their original calling to the profession, as well as their confidence to demonstrate leadership and innovation in the delivery of care.
We present a snapshot of nurses across our NHG Family who have received awards in recent years for the Nurses' Merit Award, President’s Award, Young Achiever Award, Tan Chin Tuan Nursing Award categories. They share what makes their profession so meaningful to them.
The Nurses' Merit Award (NMA) started in 1976 and is awarded to nurses who have displayed noteworthy and exceptional performance, participated in professional development, and contributed to raising the nursing profession. Nurses are nominated for the award by their healthcare insitutions and selected by a panel set up by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
The President’s Award is the highest accolade in Singapore’s nursing profession, the President’s Award for Nurses recognises nurses who have shown sustained outstanding performance and contributions to patient care delivery, education, research, and administration.
| 2024 Dr Chan Ee Yuee Deputy Director of Nursing Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH)
“Nurses are committed to positively impact our patients’ lives, and as nurse researchers, we are poised to shape that positive difference through scientific inquiry, and the acquisition, analysis, and dissemination of data and best evidence to improve patient care. Nurse-led research can inform healthcare practice, impact policies, and improve patient outcomes. The health ecosystem is complex and dynamic. Hence, it is important that nurses are equipped with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge to better advocate for patients and lead informed decision-making on care. Through our research, we can ensure that our nursing care and interventions are effective and applicable to the unique needs of our local population.”

This approach not only enhances patient care, but also fosters a culture where every nurse feels valued and empowered to contribute their best. Ultimately, knowing that my work helps improve the health and well-being of others is what makes nursing so meaningful to me. ”

“Nursing allows me to ‘do good deeds’ daily. One of the highest in honour and greatest in chivalry is showing kindness to the weak and the sick, taking care of them and looking after them. Helping the one who is sick and serving him/her is an act of charity. What matters most is that Nursing has allowed me to keep doing meaningful work – work that harmonises meaning and purpose extends my motivation to make positive contributions to the community around me.” |

“Throughout the 30 years of my career as a psychiatric nurse, I have seen the evolution of mental health nursing from custodial care to collaborative care that prioritises the rehabilitation of patients as well as supporting caregivers in their loved ones’ recovery journey. This recovery focused care model at IMH has driven me to provide care that addresses patients’ needs, working together with them to overcome obstacles to achieve their recovery goals. It also gives me the opportunity to teach, guide and attract the next and future generations of nurses to be psychiatric nurses. I hope that my fellow nurses will be inspired to go above and beyond their call of duty to improve and enhance the well-being and life of our beloved patients and their caregivers.” |
